The water has receded leaving the marks of flooding everywhere I look. But these last few days have been sunny and warm - good drying weather you might say. A drive through Fort Kent reveals yard after yard of household items laying about drying or waiting to be hauled off. A steady stream of appliances makes it's way to the scrap yard while clothes, furniture, books, photo albums, etc. lay about soaking up the sun. But it seems that most are simply thankful it was not any worse than it was. Stories of neighbors and strangers helping each other abound. Most have retained their sense of humor while enduring considerable hardship. The Valley is populated with a resilient breed of people, born of tough times and accustomed to working hard - they will persevere. Soon there will be little evidence left of the rising waters, memories of the chaos will fade but not those of the heroes that worked through the night trying to save our town. Some people go through life wondering if they have made a difference - the heroes of Fort Kent don't have that problem.

We are very happy to be open for business again at our Main Street location. SJV Wireless, Inc. has been fortunate enough to survive this disaster with no damage in our office nor to any equipment. We did lose our digital circuit to our dial-up system for internet access due to the phone company being flooded but our equipment remained operational. That circuit was repaired today - thank you Fairpoint. Our wireless broadband system continued to work flawlessly during this event. We have however endured our own sort of flood - a flood of visitors to our website. On Wednesday, the day of the flood we had over 31,000 visitors. On Thursday we served over 26,000 and so far on Friday [today] we have served over 11,000. Our server struggled but managed to provide the images from our gallery where we were posting photos of the flood as they came in. We were sent over 600 images from people throughout the area and selected the best ones to place on our site. Our webcams worked at full capacity to provide images to concerned relatives, towns people and the TV Networks. Our website became a focal point for people from all over the world as they watched our situation unfold. Due to the evacuation order on Wednesday and Thursday we worked long hours from home where we have our Wireless Internet and answered emails from concerned people while posting images to the website.

SJV Wireless, Inc. is currently providing High Speed Wireless service to the Emergency Management Agency [EMA] Command Center at the Lonesome Pine Ski Lodge. During the evacuation Wednesday morning we were asked to provide that service as they were setting up communications. Postponing our own evacuation we deployed our wireless equipment in record time to give them the connectivity they required. Due to the increase in bandwidth required to support the Command Center, Town Office and other critical areas as well as the increased load on our servers delivering images of the flood area to people all over the world - our upstream provider Pioneer Broadband offered to help out by increasing the bandwidth available to us. This makes sure that critical information such as River Gauge information, public saftey notices and other data can be accessed or transmitted quickly. Since our Wireless Broadband technology is tower based and generally on high ground we have been unaffected by the flood and continue to provide un-interrupted service to our customers. We take great pride in our ability to provide an essential service during this crisis in Fort Kent.

I would like to personally say thank you to every firefighter, rescue personnel, town employee and all of the other agencies and volunteers involved in saving our town. Their unselfish actions during this event have made so much of a difference.
